Cross-cutting issue 6: Economics, trade and incentives measures

In Australia, conservation incentives and market-based instruments for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use are important. Initiatives such as Landcare, Bushcare, Rivercare and Coastcare are specifically designed to improve native vegetation and biodiversity retention on farm and within agricultural landscapes and to improve natural resource management generally. Positive incentives are typically offered by governments as part of an environmental programme and are mainly designed to encourage improved natural resource management in agriculture so that they produce a biodiversity benefit, or protect areas of high biodiversity value on private land from destruction. Some incentives are linked to management plans, covenants or conservation agreements, or to other permanent protection tools such as formal reservation.
