Residential
Residential space and water heating, evaporative emissions from paint, cleaning fluids and other solvent based materials, backyard incinerators, wood heaters and lawn mowers all produce air pollutants. Dispersed sources such as smoke from hazard reduction burns and dust from roads and building sites also create pollution.
Woodheaters and fireplaces are significant sources of particles and carbon monoxide. In some locations, they contribute more than half the total load and are responsible for regular exceedences of ambient air quality limits. In response, the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts is undertaking a number of initiatives designed to reduce wood smoke emissions.
