The Commonwealth Government's Supervising Scientist, Dr Arthur Johnston, today corrected an incorrect media report that implied a final decision on mining at Jabiluka would be made within the next month.
" My statements at the Senate Estimates hearings on Thursday referred to a decision on the water management system at Jabiluka over the next eight to ten years, not to any decision on mining.
"The Jabiluka water management system is being reviewed by the operator of the Jabiluka project, Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), the Northern Territory regulator, the Northern Land Council and the Office of the Supervising Scientist. A decision on this issue is expected soon.
"ERA has made a commitment not to develop the Jabiluka mine to a fully operational mine until operations at the nearby Ranger Mine are complete.
"Furthermore, ERA has also said it will not develop mining at Jabiluka without the support of the Traditional Owners."
