Fire at Booderee National Park

Over the past three days, a major bushfire has been burning at the Booderee National Park on the South Coast of New South Wales.

There is extensive damage to approximately one third of the park. Some campsites at Greenpatch have been destroyed.

There have been no major injuries.

Following extensive cooperative firefighting efforts involving Booderee Park, Wreck Bay Brigade, the Department of Defence and the NSW Rural Fire Service, the fire is now within containment lines and is being controlled.

The park will be closed until 10 January, 2004.

We regret that campers who had booked holidays will not be able to access the park over the Christmas-New Year period, due to circumstances beyond our control.

The park may be re-opened to day visitors at an earlier date. However, safety considerations are paramount, and parks staff must first ensure that there is no danger to visitors.
