WSSD 2002: Australia's Overseas Aid Program fact sheet
Environment Australia, August 2002
Good governance brings competent management of a country's resources and affairs in a manner that is open, transparent, accountable, equitable and responsive to people's needs.
Sound domestic policies and supporting institutions provide the means through which developing countries can generate financial resources and use these resources effectively to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development.
Australia now provides about 20 per cent of its direct aid to governance projects.
This involves Australia working with the countries that receive our aid to improve economic and financial management, strengthen legal systems and increase the effectiveness of public sector organisations.
The aid program also supports institutions of civil society such as non-government organisations, church groups, and women's and human rights organisations.
Australia has made substantial contributions to good governance.
