WSSD 2002 fact sheet
Environment Australia, August 2002
Ecologically sustainable development, a cornerstone of Australian Government resource management policy over the past decade, is particularly important for fisheries management.
Most fishers would agree it is important to ensure that the environment providing their livelihood remains healthy and provides the resources on which they depend.
Australian fisheries legislation requires all fisheries managers to help protect and sustainably manage our ocean resources. In the past, the fishery management focus has been on protecting target species from overfishing. Now, ecologically sustainable development requires that we go further and manage the total impact of fishing on the environment.
