About the factsheet

Education is a basic building block for development. Education gives people the skills and knowledge to reduce poverty and make a difference to their own lives and the lives of others.

Because education is so important, Australia will spend an estimated $A280 million through the overseas aid program in the education sector. Education is a major focus of our aid program.

Basic education gives people literacy and numeracy skills, which they can use to improve their everyday lives.
