WSSD 2002 fact sheet
Environment Australia, August 2002
Australia's coastal communities have embraced the country's largest environmental rescue effort, the Australian Government's A$2.5 billion Natural Heritage Trust.
Including islands, Australia's coast is approximately 60 000 kilometres long and it supports more than 85 per cent of the population, among whom is nearly half the nation's Indigenous people. The coast is rich in natural and cultural resources and is the focus of much of Australia's economic, social, tourism and recreational activity.
