The Goal

To reduce Australia’s greenhouse emissions whilst meeting future energy demands and maintaining living standards.

The Challenge

The energy sector accounts for 68% of Australia’s greenhouse emissions profile. This must be reduced as part of Australia’s response to global climate change.

Development and use of practical low emissions technologies, such as clean coal technologies and renewable energy, is an important step in meeting the challenge of reducing Australia’s greenhouse emissions. With major reserves of coal and natural gas in Australia, it is important to investigate ways of capturing and storing CO2 and examine a range of low emission technologies.

This Case Study

In 2004, the Australian government issued the energy policy statement, Securing Australia’s Energy Future, with the aim of achieving energy prosperity, security and sustainability.

To do this, a number of policy initiatives were required to address Australia’s energy policy goals:

This case study outlines some of these initiatives and their achievements.

How did we make it happen?

A range of initiatives and measures have been introduced in Australia in order to achieve these goals. They include, but are not limited to, the establishment of the Energy Transformed flagship at the Government’s major research organisation (CSIRO), the Key Centre for Photovoltaic Engineering at the University of New South Wales, and cooperative research centres for the development of energy technologies for brown coal, black coal and the geological storage of CO2.

Additional measures include the Low Emissions Technology Demonstration Fund (AU$500 million over 15 years), which supports the demonstration of new low emissions technologies with the aim of encouraging private sector investment.

This initiative is supported by the Renewable Energy Development Initiative (AU$100 million over 7 years), that aims to promote the commercialisation of renewable energy technologies, systems and processes. Further funding (AU$20 million) has also been allocated for the development of advanced electricity storage technologies.

What have we learnt?

The progress made towards developing and implementing low emissions technology in Australia has illustrated the need for a multidisciplinary approach, with close involvement of the government, research and industry. The right policy settings are required in order to direct resources into and encourage technology driven approaches.
