About the report
Welcome to the third sustainability report produced by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources.
The challenges of achieving sustainability in government are significant, but as this report demonstrates, better management of risks, cost and waste can be of great benefit to the community and the planet.
This year we continue our transition to tailored, online sustainability reporting. As more sites contribute data, we are able to report on performance in trend terms, and we will continue this process for 2006-07. Our key challenge remains to reduce the impacts in per person terms. As well as this summary report (available in hard copy and online), further data on particular issues is available from our website.
The web site version allows readers to find out more information about the issues that most interest them. I encourage you to read the report and provide feedback, both on it and on my department's performance.
David Borthwick
Secretary, Department of the Environment and Water Resources
