Man convicted for illegally smuggling skinks
A 36 year old Japanese national male has been fined $3000 and sentenced to six months imprisonment after attempting to illegally export nine shingleback skinks from Perth to Japan late last year.
On 24 January 2013, Mr Takashi Handa appeared in Perth Magistrates court and was convicted of a number of charges including attempting to export a specimen that is a regulated native specimen, contrary to section 303DD and cruelty offences, contrary to 303GP of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Customs and Border Protection and Department of Environment and Conservation officers at Perth Airport found the nine shingleback skinks concealed in two plastic containers in his hand luggage.
Mr Handa will be due for release on 21 April 2013.
