National refrigeration and air conditioning licensing scheme - effective 1 July 2005

A new national licensing system for technicians and businesses in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry will commence from 1 July 2005.
The new licensing system supports regulations under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 and introduces national standards for the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, including the automotive industry, which will lead to reduced emissions of environmentally harmful refrigerant gases.
From 1 July 2005, any person who handles refrigerant gases where there is a risk of emission (either ozone depleting substances or synthetic greenhouse gases) will require a Refrigerant Handling Licence. These gases include refrigerants such as R12, R11, R22, R134a and R410a. Any person or company who buys or sells gas will be required to hold an authorisation.
The Australian Refrigeration Council has been selected to administer the national authorisation and licensing system. An information pack, including application forms, is being sent to state and territory accreditation or registration holders, where this information is available to the Australian Government. Alternatively, application forms can be downloaded from www.arctick.org or are available through the Australian Refrigeration Council hotline on 1300 884 483 or from your local refrigerant wholesaler.
