Have your say on the accreditation of voluntary product stewardship arrangements

Media release
28 February 2012

You are invited to have your say on the development of a model for how organisations can obtain accreditation for voluntary product stewardship activities.

The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities today released a consultation paper on how best to publicly recognise and encourage organisations to voluntarily manage products in ways that reduce their impact on health and the environment, without the need to regulate.

Examples of voluntary product stewardship may include reducing hazardous substances in products through improved product design and manufacture, or activities that improve recycling rates for products at the end of their life.

Applicants who successfully obtain accreditation will be granted use of the Australian Government's product stewardship logo to give credence to their efforts.

The consultation paper is open for comment until 27 March 2012 with public meetings also to be held in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

Responses to this public consultation will be considered in developing the final model to enable voluntary product stewardship accreditation under the Product Stewardship Act 2011.

A copy of the consultation paper as well as information about public meetings and how to make a submission is available from www.environment.gov.au/product-stewardship
