Register of Environmental Organisations guidelines & application form


The application form must be completed by organisations seeking entry to the Register of Environmental Organisations and endorsement as a deductible gift recipient. The form must be submitted to the Department of the Environment (the Department), together with any supporting documentation.

The information on the form and any attachments is used by the Department to assess your eligibility for inclusion on the Register.

The application form is cross-referenced to the Guidelines for your convenience. Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Guidelines provide clarification to the requirements listed on the application.

Public fund management committee member nomination


A nomination form is required to be submitted to the Department for assessment for all proposed members. The Department is responsible for assessing proposed members for 'responsible person' status.

Statistical return of tax deductible donations


Organisations listed on the Register of Environmental Organisations (the Register) are required to submit statistical information to the Department of the Environment (the Department) on an annual basis. This requires the submission of the 2015 statistical return form.

Organisations that are Registered Charities are required to report to both the Department and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission.

To avoid delays in reporting, organisations are not required to submit a copy of their audited financial statement with the statistical return. However, the Department may request supplementary information, including an audited financial statement, as part of its assurance process.

Statistical return forms for previous years

Those organisations who have not submitted statistical returns for previous years can access the forms for previous years below. These forms should be submitted with the 2015 statistical return.

Assurance process

The Department will be undertaking an assurance process for the Register involving a sample of organisations. Organisations subject to this assurance process may be requested by the Department to provide supplementary information to the statistical return at that time, and this may include an audited financial statement. The Department will provide reasonable notice for the organisation to respond to any such request.

Failure to provide information requested by the Department may result in the commencement of compliance action which may result in removal from the Register. Any action taken by the Department in this regard will be done in accordance with the Register's Guidelines and relevant legislation, including the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
